The goal of the project is to analyze pet health data for an early-warning system for earthquakes.
Due to their heightened sensitivity to geophysical changes, animals such as dogs behave erratically, seen as excessive barking, pacing, or digging. By recording data where multiple dogs behave abnormally, we are developing an early-warning system for earthquakes.
Scientific as well as anecdotal evidence show that dogs behave out of agitation 1 to 20 hours prior to an earthquake. Thanks to the highly sensitive PetPace smart collar, we are now able to collect data about microbehavioral changes that come before an earthquake, to get a better understanding of this phenomenon.
Starting with a long list of volunteers, the subjects of the study were randomly selected while ensuring that none of the dogs were in close proximity.
No, the dogs didn’t have to change their routines for the study. Equipped with the collars, they were allowed to stay with their families in their homes.
We made note of changes in weather, environmental factors like thunderstorms, moon illumination etc., which are known to influence dog behavior. This helped discard any data that wasn’t a result of pre-earthquake activity.
The possibility of an earthquake is only considered when multiple dogs, spread across the city, show the same increasing trends in anxiety and agitation.
Yes, the collars are fitted with electrode-free sensors and designed by PetPace with guidance from veterinarian experts.
The PetPace collars make use of the most advanced sensor technology which can measure signals non-invasively through fur and skin.
The PetPace collars were designed for all kinds of dogs, keeping in mind their varied levels of activity. The collars can withstand dirt, dust, and are also water resistant.
The data is securely transferred to a cloud database and anonymized for the privacy of the pet and pet-owner.
No, the PetPace collar is safe to use for all dogs despite any pre-existing medical conditions. In fact, the collar was designed to help monitor pet health.
You can buy a collar for your dog from the PetPace online store.

Cats also possess heightened senses that make them behave abnormally before earthquakes. PetPace is currently designing a special collar for cats, so keep on an eye on this space, as we will be expanding the initiative to cats as well.
As of now, yes. Planning is underway for launching the alerts in Tokyo, Turkey, Australia, and more.
